When inserted before sowing, they crush the clods of the tilled field, compact the soil, and create a balance between air pockets, regulating the soil's water-air ratio and preparing a good seedbed.
After sowing, they help increase the contact between the seeds and the soil, bringing the water in the lower layers closer to the area where the seeds are located, thus aiding germination.

The Vanvey is a second-class soil cultivation machine. These are tools inserted into the field after ploughing, specifically to prepare a ploughed field for sowing.
